Have you ever wondered what makes your favorite celebrity have the perfect pout? In the digital age, various celebrities from Bollywood to Hollywood to the music industry around the world have talked about their favorite lipsticks or showcased them in their social media posts. However, few names in the industry love lip balms or pigmented lip balms and keep them as must-have beauty essentials in their purse.
However, for someone who has just started exploring the big world of cosmetics industry in India, deciding whether to start with lipstick or lip balm seems like a complicated task.
The basic difference between lip balms, lipsticks and pigmented lip balms is the purpose and the occasion.
Avleen Bansal, head of training at Makeup Studio India, says lip products like lip balm, lip gloss and lipstick have multiple uses. “A lip gloss provides shine and a hint of color, while a lip balm typically serves to nourish and protect the lips. Vibrant shades of lipstick make a strong statement,” Bansal tells FPJ.
For newcomers, lipstick is a bullet of color that comes in a variety of textures and formulas to enhance the color of your pout. Women use them to give color, texture and protection to their lips. Although many women wear lipstick, it can have drawbacks such as dryness and black lips, so a soft, emollient product known as lip balm is applied to the lips to soften, moisturize and protect them. -the bear. Helps protect lips from sun rays and wind. In addition, it prevents cracks, inflammation and dehydration of the lips. Hence, lip balms are necessary to protect the lips from damage.
How each one works
For Komal Pange, Beauty Advisor, Mary Cohr India, lip balm is a daily lip care product that is formulated to hydrate and protect the lips. “It usually consists of ingredients like beeswax, shea butter or oils to help retain moisture and prevent chapped lips. Lip balms can also act as primers when applied before lipstick,” says Pange.
He adds that lipsticks are cosmetic products that are made with a combination of pigments, oils and waxes to provide color, texture and shine. They come in a variety of finishes such as matte, glossy or metallic, and can vary in tone from neutral to bold.
On the other hand, Pange elucidates that the pigmented lip balm is a combination of lip balm and lipstick as it is used to color the lips while moisturizing and protecting them. “Pigmented lip balm typically has a sheer, subtle color and a glossy or satin finish and usually contains similar ingredients to regular lip balms,” she says.
Many confuse the use of lipsticks as lip balms, but Komal says that due to their higher concentration of pigments, waxes, fragrances, preservatives and drying ingredients, lipsticks are usually not suitable for use- them as balms.
“If you want to use it as a lip balm, choose a lipstick with moisturizing ingredients like shea butter, jojoba oil, or vitamin E. Stay away from products with drying ingredients like menthol or alcohol,” she says .
Now you know that all three of these products are significantly different, even though their main focus is lip care. Lip balms are primarily used to moisturize and protect lips from dryness, chapping, and cracking. Lipsticks, on the other hand, are cosmetic products designed to add color and shine to the lips, and pigmented lip balms are a hybrid of the two products. They provide the color and shine of lipstick while moisturizing and protecting lips like a lip balm.
Ananya Kapur, founder of Type Beauty says that “if you’re looking to hydrate and protect your lips, go for a lip balm and if you want to add color and shine, go for a lipstick. if you want the best of both worlds, try a pigmented lip balm,” she says.
Use with care
Like its advantages, its use also varies. “When you wake up, your lips are probably dry; when you go for a run; when you are carrying out your daily responsibilities; After eating; and right before going to sleep. Lip balms are used during all these activities. So, it is present throughout the day,” says Bansal.
Wear lipstick whenever you want to make a statement whether it’s dramatic or subtle depending on the occasion and your personality. It also contributes to improving your everyday look. If the lipstick is very moisturizing, you can use it as a lip balm to make the lips supple and add a slight tint.
