Chennai: The Madras High Court on Thursday imposed a fine of ₹ 25,000 on a public interest petitioner seeking an order to the Election Commission of India to disable the AIADMK’s “two leaves” symbol.

A first bench comprising Chief Justice MN Bhandari and Justice N. Mala said that the petition was filed purely for publicity, while J.J. A PIL filed by city resident BA Joseph, who claimed to be the founder-leader of the party, was dismissed.

The petition demanded that until the issues between Edappadi K. Palaniswami and O. Panneerselvam are resolved, the Election Commission should be ordered to take necessary action against the rival groups of AIADMK, disable the two-leaf symbol and consider its petition dated June 28. To maintain public order and peace in the state.

In his petition, PA Joseph leveled some allegations against Mr. Palaniswami in connection with the party’s leadership tussle. The ruling group, which supports the former chief minister, has been insisting that he should be installed as a single chief minister.

The petitioner approached the court without waiting a week from the ECI. The Supreme Court dismissed the petition stating that it was filed purely for cheap publicity.
