Kochi: After a landmark decision to grant menstrual leave to female students, the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) here has now given freedom to engineering students to wear either kameez or churidar pants. The Vice President of the University has accepted the urgent request of the students in this regard in a recent order. Till now, under CUSAT, School of Engineering boys had to wear shirt and trousers and girl students had to wear churidar.
Now under the new order, both boys and girls will have the option to wear shirt-trousers or churidar. In a letter to Shobha S, the university’s joint registrar, the Director of the School of Engineering made it clear that the new guidelines would come into force from June 1, 2023. The letter said the Vice-Chancellor has directed the School of Engineering to adopt a gender neutral uniform without changing the color of the existing uniform. The university has taken this decision on the recent representation of Namita George, president of the student union SFI (Students Federation of India) of CUSAT.

It can be noted that at the beginning of this year, CUSAT had given “menstrual leave” to female students. Based on this, he had given an additional relaxation of two percent in the attendance of girl students in every semester.
