Major action was taken against Khalistani radical and separatist preacher Amritpal Singh in Punjab today. 78 of his associates were arrested, the search for Amritpal continues. Prior to this action, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had met Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
People closely following the matter said on condition of anonymity that in the meeting held on March 2, the arrest of Amritpal was discussed between the two leaders.

Sources said the central government had already sent additional forces to Punjab ahead of the action. The plan was to arrest Amritpal after the G-20 meetings in the state ended on Friday. Acting swiftly in this matter, the police nabbed his accomplices within 24 hours.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann tweeted a meeting with the home minister on March 2, in which he wrote that the Center and the state agreed to work together on the issue of the law.

Amritpal Singh heads ‘Waris Punjab De’, a radical outfit started by actor and activist Deep Sidhu. Deep Sidhu had died in a road accident in February last year. Amritpal Singh describes himself as a follower of terrorist Bhindranwale. In recent months, he continued to give controversial speeches.
Today Amritpal was on his way to Jalandhar, Lok Sabha by-elections are also to be held in Jalandhar. This seat fell vacant after the death of Congress MP Santokh Chowdhary due to which special polls are being held here. But Amritpal is not known from Jalandhar.
